Surgery & Dentistry

Equipped with advanced surgical tools, our highly skilled medical staff treat patients with more complex needs attentively and help restore their health quickly.

Dentistry

Routine dental care is key to increasing your pet's lifespan and the quality of their life. While we do recommend at-home dental care and provide a variety of methods to assist you in the home care of your pet's teeth, we offer anesthetic dental cleanings and care as recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American College of Veterinary Dentists. Following current medical standards, we do not recommend dental cleanings on awake patients, as they can cause damage and it only provides cosmetic cleaning without detailed removal of plaque and bacteria. In addition, anesthesia-free dentistry does not allow for complete evaluation of all interior aspects of the teeth which are hard to perform on an awake patient. We follow AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) guidelines (www.aaha.org) to maintain the best possible standards for our care.
  • Under anesthesia, we perform a full oral exam, complete with probing of all surfaces and complete charting, which is saved into the permanent patient file for complete patient history. Teeth are pretreated with a disinfecting rinse, then ultrasonically scaled both on the visible surface and under the gumline, where the majority of bacteria will accumulate. The teeth are then polished with a power hand piece.
  • In addition to the dental evaluation and cleaning, our facilities are equipped to take full mouth and individual dental radiographs, and perform any dental extractions that may become necessary. Just like your dentist takes x-rays of your teeth, we perform full-mouth preventative radiographs for your pet. This allows us to have a baseline for later in life in the event that problems arise. As most problems start below the gumline, radiographs give us an accurate look at the roots and ligaments of the teeth and the jaw bone. Radiographs can help us find problems such as hidden abscesses, broken roots, and bone decay at an early stage before they become painful for your pet.
  • If there are problematic teeth, our facility is capable of performing dental extractions. We perform complete pain management before, during, and after the procedure for your pet, including nerve blocks and post-operative pain medications to go home for full pain management. Pre and post x-rays are taken of any tooth to be extracted for complete assessment of the extraction. Dissolving sutures are used so the recovery time is as rapid as possible for your pet.
At the discharge of each procedure, a technician will discuss the procedure and any follow up care, and help determine how best to continue with care at home. Studies show that years can be added to a pet's life with proper dental care, so the more we can do for our pet's dental health the better their lives will be.

Surgery

No matter what procedure your pet needs, all of the staff at Ally Pet Medical Center appreciate that your pet is a beloved companion and that any anesthetic procedure should never be taken lightly. Therefore, our doctors work to maintain proper pre-surgical care through bloodwork and other diagnostic tests to ensure that your pet is prepared for anesthesia. All of our staff work to maintain the highest standards of care possible, from initial check-in, to recovery and discharge. We pride ourselves on following AAHA standards (www.aaha.org) and we want to make every procedure as smooth and stress free as possible for both you and your pet. Our doctors routinely perform many surgeries for our feline and canine patients, including, but not limited to:
  • Spays
  • Neuters
  • Mass removals
  • Wound repairs
  • Cherry Eye repair - prolapsed third eyelid
  • Cystotomies- bladder surgery to remove bladder stones
  • Amputations
Our surgical suite is fully stocked for a variety of complex surgical procedures, and equipped with high-end anesthesia monitoring equipment to make sure that your pet is safe under controlled and monitored care. Each pet's surgical plan is tailored precisely for their weight and any specific health condition. All of our surgical patients have technician staff monitoring anesthesia during the entire procedure alongside the doctor performing surgery. Our patients receive IV fluids to maintain hydration levels, we use gas anesthesia to maintain constant depth of surgical anesthesia, and we monitor with multi-parameter equipment to make sure that all vital systems are functioning properly. Our monitoring system includes looking at:
  • SPO2: monitoring oxygen levels in the blood
  • End tidal CO2: monitoring carbon dioxide levels within the closed anesthesia system
  • Heart rate
  • Respiratory rate
  • Anesthesia level: we can adjust the depth needed to maintain anesthesia at the appropriate level indicated for the surgery
  • Blood pressure (systolic/diastolic)
Temperature: Our surgical table is heated and additional heat support is provided to keep patients warm and stable
Positive pressure ventilation - manually assisted additional ventilation as needed to ensure proper lung volume function

Our patients are prepped under sterile methods, and monitored during the entire duration of each procedure and recovery from anesthesia under the supervision of trained personnel to provide optimal care for each and every patient. We manage all aspects of pain control, with pre-operative pain control, through the procedure with local and specific nerve blocks, and with post-operative pain control and medication to go home.

As pet owners ourselves, we understand how important pets are in our families and we make sure that each pet you leave in our care will be treated as if the pet were our own furry friend.
